Teen Who Made $130,000 Selling White iPhone 4 Kits Closes Website

December 7th, 2010

It’s hard to imagine that he did it out of his own will, but Fei Lam of Queens, New York has shut down his website which sold white iPhone 4 conversion kits. As you’ve probably heard, he made a respectable $130,000 off the whole deal, but now it’s come to an end for reasons Lam hasn’t disclosed yet.

The whole thing was shrouded in mystery to begin with. How does a 17-year-old get in touch with the right people to host this kind of service? And can it possibly all be legal? WhiteiPhone4now.com satisfied many customers by giving them full conversion kits with the actual manufacturer’s parts. A full package sold for $279, with individual panels also available.

At this point it’s being suspected that Apple played some part in getting the site shut down. Back when we first covered this story, Lam had just received a letter from a private investigator accusing him of selling stolen goods. Whether or not this ultimate closure is related to that threat, the outcome is the same. No more white iPhone 4 until spring 2011, when Apple will finally (and I do mean finally) release the white unit. But putting much faith in their word is not recommended. However it happens, just keep believing that you’ll someday get your white device. It just won’t be from Fei Lam, because as he says it, “We have closed the site, possibly permanently.”

Viber Hits 1 Million Users, Competes with Skype

December 7th, 2010

You might have thought, as I did, that the VoIP space was thoroughly saturated with the handful of options that already existed in the App Store, but somehow Viber has managed to cause a stir, getting one million downloads in five days and continuing to roll.

So, what sets it apart? The developer’s description of Viber says it is an iPhone application that lets you make free phone calls to other iPhone users that have Viber installed. Nothing new there. But apparently the app’s sound quality and stability are quite remarkable. In addition, users are not required to create a username or bother with alerting their contacts about a new number. With Viber, you are identified by your iPhone number, and you get to enjoy a seamless integration with your current address book. That’s a pretty big benefit, one that might be largely responsible for this underdog’s sudden popularity of the social networking section of the App Store.

You can get Viber as a free download, and you won’t have to worry about being prompted to spend money once you’re in the application. The developer states, “All Viber features are 100% FREE and do not require any additional “in application” purchase.” Okay, but with no annoying ads running across the top, it’s a bit of a mystery just what is keeping Viber going . . . Oh well, that’s not your problem. If you’re looking for clear calls over wi-fi and 3G, you can try Viber Viber - Free Phone Calls - Viber Media, Inc. for free without even going to the trouble of creating an ID. If it continues to grow, this could be the VoIP hotspot in the near future.

Djay for iPad Is An Affordable Tool for Amateurs

December 7th, 2010

Everyone loves the idea of being a DJ, but put them behind some turntables and a mixer and I’m pretty sure things would go south. It might look easy, but there’s definitely an art to scratching and mixing, and equipment costs have kept many amateurs out of the game for a long time. But that’s beginning to change, as djay for iPad steps onto the scene, offering a full-fledged DJ tool for $19.99. I’m sure there are a lot of professional musicians out there who will make this digital shortcut the object of their scorn, but for the rest of us, it looks pretty dang cool.

The new app from developer algoriddim offers automixing features for those who don’t want to get too involved, but then it goes well beyond and delivers real control over gain, crossfaders, BPM, and all kinds of other technical elements. And of course, scratching is at the center of it all; and if you need your hand held to get started, djay for iPad will auto-cut your scratches so that the song’s rhythmic pattern is automatically applied.

But that just scratches the surface (pun intended). There is a lot packed into this app, including AirPlay support, multitasking, and all the other fundamentals. This new direction for music apps is possible since Apple has started giving third-party apps access to your entire music library. We’ll have a review coming your way in time, but early impressions look like djay for iPad djay - algoriddim is a great step toward getting more out of your iOS music. We’ll let you know if it’s worth 20 bucks.

You Can Get an iPhone 4 for as Low as $25 at Radio Shack!

December 7th, 2010

Nobody got too excited about Apple’s lackluster Black Friday deals, but now a great deal is coming from an unlikely source. RadioShack is ready to take $50 off the regular price of an iPhone 4 from December 4th until December 11th. They’re trying to raise awareness about their wireless business, and this should definitely do the trick.

But if $50 off doesn’t do it for you, consider the deal you could get once you trade in your iPhone 3G or 3GS. RadioShack’s “Trade & Save” program will give you a $75 credit for your 3G; or, better yet, $125 for your 3GS. So you probably don’t need my help with the rest of this math, but so long as your eligible for the upgrade, you can get a 16GB iPhone 4 for $25 when you combine the two deals. Not bad. Not bad at all.

As far as we can tell, there aren’t any strings attached. Of course, you’ll have to pay the usual activation fees and taxes, which will bump it up a little. The Trade & Save program has also been slightly modified to accommodate this promotion. Whereas RadioShack usually bases the value of handsets on their physical condition, you’ll now get full credit so long as your device is “fully functional” and without a cracked screen. Interested? Find a location here and then hurry over. I’d expect this deal to be quite popular once news spreads.
